English holiday courses: Bath, England

The favourite of “Beau” Nash

Situated in the south-east of England, at the heart of the magnificent hills of Somerset and less than 2 hours from London, Bath is one of the most beautiful cities of the kingdom. Famous for its thermal baths since the Roman era, Bath became a very popular holiday spot amongst aristocrats in the 18th century. With most of its current architecture dating back to this era, the entire city has been listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. Even today, Bath still resembles this elegant prize as described by Jane Austen in "Northanger Abbey" and "Persuasion". It contains some of the most beautiful architectural and historical jewels in Europe. The Roman baths, the gothic Saint Peter's Abbey and the superb Royal Crescent, one of the greatest examples of Georgian architecture in the United Kingdom, are included among the most beautiful assets. Nevertheless, it would be wrong to believe that this "so British" city is exclusively reserved for lovers of English Palladian and Georgian architecture. Bath has internationally renowned theatre stages to which various annual music and cinema festivals come in order to liven up the cultural life. The centre abounds with select boutiques, fine restaurants and authentic pubs where it is good to make a stop following a musuem visit, a crossing on the Avon or a long bath in the natural hot water sources of the "Thermae Bath Spa". And, to add even more to your pleasure, the surrounding countryside is home to splendid castles and gardens in the sumptuous decor of the Cotswolds. The site of Stonehenge, only an hour's journey away, could alone make your visit to England worthwhile, and Bristol, the robust coastal neighbour, will offer you a great breath of salty air. Whether thermal, architectural, literary, Roman or English, Bath is definitely much more than a bath of lukewarm water...You're going to love it!
