English holiday courses: Boston, United States

Tea Party at MIT

The main city of the state of Massachusetts, former capital of the Union, the unfortunate rival, in the 19th century, of Baltimore then New York, today, Boston conserves a profound originality. Founded in 1630 on the estuary of the Charles River, Boston became distinguished in 1773 when it transformed its port into a giant teapot. Two years later, a robust and loyal rebel, it defended itself with remarkable courage on the slopes of Breed's Hill. The British dominion imposed by George III started to falter and Boston became the figurehead of the American Revolution. Nowadays, the "Cradle of Liberty" has lost nothing of its panache. As the main university centre of the United States and the economic and cultural heart of New England, Boston is a magnificent city which gladly welcomes those who are passionate about history and culture. Whether on a visit of historical Boston or to the Museum of Fine Arts, a trip to Harvard or to the JFK Library and Museum, at a theatre evening or a concert at the Boston Symphony Orchestra, it is impossible to get bored in the historical capital of the United States! In order to add to your pleasure, this cosmopolitan and multicultural city has a very good public transport network and a "downtown" which can be easily covered on foot. From the banks of the Charles River to the Long Wharf, for example, whilst offering yourself a detour through the peaceful gardens of Park Street and a shopping stop-over at Fanueil Hall, a few hours will suffice...whilst really taking your time! A cultural gem, refined, sophisticated, convivial and very pleasant to live in, Boston leaves absolutely nobody indifferent. Enjoy this great experience!
