English holiday courses: St. Julians, Malta
A honey-coloured island
Located at 35°55' North and 14°30' East, Malta is the main island of the Maltese archipelago which extends over 45 kilometres from the north-west to the south-east, halfway between the Levant and Gibraltar. Its strategic position was appreciated for a long time and was often coveted. Firmly moored at the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta fell successively into the hands of the Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Carthagians, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Arabs and the Knights of Saint John. You have to admit, it has everything to please. A hard-worker, proud of its landscapes of yellow stone, the island of Malta, through its character and its coulours, deserves its name of «mélita», the bee. With a perfect climate, an island way of life rich in superimposed cultures, a generous land and a cultural heritage of extraordinary diversity, Malta gladly welcomes those who wish to spend holidays in the sun, but who nonethless don't wish to do without pleasures of the mind. Here, the golden limestone still keeps the mark of the sacred fire offered to the gods. Zebbug, Tarxien, Xemxija, Mdina…millennia of sculpture and architecture are told at the bend of each path. Venturing into the narrow streets of Paola, in the south of Valletta, in order to discover one of the most curious remains of the Bronze Age, contemplating the generous forms that the artists of the Maltese Neolithic Age created with talent or happily getting lost in the 55 hectares garnished with art of Valletta...then enjoying the beautiful terrasses of St. Julians and of Sliema to sit down at a table amongst friends in front of a "bass" which has just been fished. Finally, when the sweetness of the Maltese evenings comes, a festive spirit spreads around in each bay. Cafés, restaurants and clubs share their spontaneity and their good humour with the inhabitants and tourists...Cultivated, a gourmet, festive, cosmopolitan and a very pleasant place to live, Malta is one of the most charming destinations to learn English and promises you unforgettable language-learning holidays.
