French holiday courses: Lyon, France
The challenge of the Canuts
A Roman colony founded in 43 B.C., Lugdunum experienced a brilliant destiny very quickly, that of the capital of Gaul. The current capital of the Rhône-Alpes region, Lyon has always benefitted from an excellent situation between Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, on the Saône-Rhône axis and at the mouth of the Alps. On 8th December 1998, the city celebrated its Fête des Lumières with pomp and circumstance and made a remarkable entrance into the very exclusive circles of urban centres listed by UNESCO thanks to the exceptional heritage of the Croix Rousse, old Lyon and Presqu'île districts, linked in an exemplary continuity through more than two thousand years of history. From the Fourvière Cathedral, the panorama is splendid. On the right, the Part-Dieu "crayon" (tower) symbolises whilst shining, the St. Jean Cathedral and the buildings of old Lyon appear in the foreground, just below on the quays of the Saône; on the left, the hills of the Croix Rousse descend down to the Presqu'île where you can make out the belfry of the town hall and the flamboyant roof of the Opera inspired by its Muses...A magnificent invitation to travel the length and breadth of one of the most beautiful cities of Europe. Lyon is discovered gently, whilst strolling. Through desires, detours, the long flights of stairs of the traboules, the decors of Blanchet or interior courtyards hidden behind gothic and Renaissance facades of original Lyon. Intimist and solemn, the Museum of Fine Arts in the Palais Saint Pierre presents itself as a "Small Louvre", capable of satisfying the most demanding of art lovers. The authentic bouchons offer their festival of flavours around a pot of "St. Jo" on generous tables in good humour. In the way of the Canuts and with its most precious sons, Lyon weaves a magnificent work of light, art and culinary delights. You're going to love it!
