Switzerland, behind the postcard
Everything one says about Switzerland is true. So many mountains that one no longer knows what to do with them, on breathtaking horizon lines. Chocolate factories that one visits like the most beautiful gothic cathedrals. A watch making industry which half the world looks to copy without finding the adequate tick-tock. A banking secret which took a blow, but which hides a much more fundamental secret for the Helvetic identity, the recipe for cheese fondue and a sweetness of life which sometimes borders on contemplation.
All this is true, like all the postcards, but nothing is said. Beside the Château de Chillon, the Jet d’Eau of Geneva, the beauty of the lands in French-speaking Switzerland, this small corner of the country (seven cantons, for a French-speaking population which does not exceed two million) has its share of surprises in store. It has a cultural life amongst the richest in the world, very largely supported by the State which wishes to disclaim its reputation as a sanatorium, and a welcoming population which is used to meeting visitors from around the world. Movements of contemporary art and architecture, which contribute to the fame of the territory on all the continents.
Switzerland is not only beautiful, it knows how to welcome those who visit it with open arms.
